Small Bussines And You

Advantages of small business

A small business can be started at a very low cost and on a part-time basis. Small business is also well suited to internet marketing because it can easily serve specialized niches, something that would have been more difficult prior to the internet revolution which began in the late 1990s. Adapting to change is crucial in business and particularly small business; not being tied to any bureaucratic inertia, it is typically easier to respond to the marketplace quickly. Small business proprietors tend to be intimate with their customers and clients which results in greater accountability and responsiveness.

Independence is another advantage of owning a small business. One survey of small business owners showed that 38% of those who left their jobs at other companies said their main reason for leaving was that they wanted to be their own bosses. Freedom to operate independently is a reward for small business owners. In addition, many people desire to make their own decisions, take their own risks, and reap the rewards of their efforts. Small business owners have the satisfaction of making their own decisions within the constraints imposed by economic and other environmental factors. However, entrepreneurs have to work very long hours and understand that ultimately their customers are their bosses.

Several organizations also provide help for the small business sector, such as the Internal Revenue Service's Small Business and Self-Employed One-Stop Resource

Marketing the small business

Common marketing techniques for small business include networking, word of mouth, customer referrals, yellow pages directories, television, radio, outdoor (roadside billboards), print, email marketing, and internet. Electronic media like TV can be quite expensive and is normally intended to create awareness of a product or service.

Many small business owners find internet marketing more affordable. Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing are two popular options of getting small business products or services in front of motivated Web searchers. Advertising on niche sites can also be effective, but with the long tail of the internet, it can be time intensive to advertise on enough sites to garner an effective reach.

Certification and trust

Building trust with new customers can be a difficult task for a new and establishing business. Some organizations like the Better Business Bureau and the International Charter now offer Small Business Certification, which certifies the quality of the services and goods produced and can encourage new and larger customers. These services may require a few hours of work, but a certification may reassure potential customers. However, the most effective way to earn trust is through customer referrals.

5 Ways to Advertise Cheaply to Boost Your Business Profits

1. Don't overlook cheap lineage classified advertising in your local advertising papers. I run several businesses and the first way I promote these is seek the weekly free ad rags and ring them to discover the cheapest rates on offer: often you can gain a huge discount advertising throughout the year and paying 13 weeks ahead. Ask for the cheapest lineage and consider whether a frame or box is worth the extra: it will make your ad stand out from the others.

2. Local newspapers come next. Some will be weekly and some daily. Do they have a relevant section or category for your business? Ask if they will create a section for you if not. Again you may secure a discount by advertising 13 weeks ahead. Does your local newspaper have a free ad equivalent? You will find the rate two thirds cheaper in these. Ask!

3. Internet advertising is free, exciting and reliable! Get people talking about you! Believe in what you offer and do a good job every time so your clients recommend you to their friends. You can even kickstart this by giving your client an offer for recommending you.

4. Leaflet distribution. Have 5000 or more leaflets printed for your business. Don't go over the top with gloss and colour: just stick to your name, what you offer, opening hours, a contact number and address, a photo, a logo, some client quotes, a price drop or 10% offer with this leaflet. Make it easy to understand and include a reason for the householder to store your leaflet rather than bin it! You can pay a local company to distribute your leaflets cheaply, or get your staff to drop some when business is slack: this can be an important morale booster: people feel good when they are actively promoting the business rather than aimlessly standing round the water cooler. You may want to plan your drop campaign by highlighting areas of your local map. Leaflets are particularly effective for takeaway delivery businesses: how effective can you make your leaflets for your business? Include a cut out coupon with an irresistable discount offer.

5. Don't underestimate the power of your credit card size business card! This helps to promote word of mouth recommendations: ask people to pin your card to their kitchen pin board: particularly effective for plumbers! I also have my card created as fridge magnets to give happy clients. Keep a number of cards on you at all times and aim to increase your networking. Determine to talk about your business and give out 5 or 10 cards every single day! Encourage your staff to do the same! Give out two cards each time and ask each person to give your card to a friend! Join local clubs and societies with the aim of increasing your social circle so you can promote your business subtly by talking about what you do, what excites you about the products you promote.
